Planar races

Postby Rip on Sat May 17, 2008 2:45 am

...fragmentary project I started long ago and just rediscovered in my files.

Elemental Plane of Earth

Earth Whisper (Races of Stone)
Earth whispers are an old breed of earth elementals, dating back to the days before elemental spirits learned how to animate the elements around them. They continue to eschew creating bodies for themselves even today, believing the custom to be a decadent and vulgur affectation. To them, the earth is too holy to abuse in such a way. Other earth elementals view them as rustic cousins, viewing their eccentricities as strange but harmless. For their part, they tolerate other earth elementals only because they are not numerous or powerful enough to challenge them. They concentrate their righteous anger on persecuting mortals who seek to plunder the earth of its treasures, using their own greed to corrupt and destroy them in what they view as fitting irony..

Ogremoch has managed to convince the leaders of the earth whispers to ally themselves with his cause, promising to help them rid the earth of fleshy creatures who would wound it with their picks and shovels. They view Ogromoch with the same distaste they view other earth elementals not of their kind, but they respect his power and believe they share common goals. They will wed their cause to Ogremoch's until the fleshy defilers are gone, and then they will divorce themselves from the pollution of outsiders for all eternity.

Mount Celestia

Hammer Archon (Races of Stone)
Hammer archons are primarily found in Solania, where they serve Moradin and Berronar. Due to a pact between the Celestian hierarchy and the gnomish pantheon, gnomish petitioners in Bytopia's Golden Hills are sometimes transformed into hammer archons as well, though they travel to Solania to do so. After rigorous testing and elaborate rites, they return to the Golden Hills changed, made more powerful and able to serve the gods (primarily Segojan Earthcrawler and Calladuran Smoothhands) in new ways.

Hammer archons are often tasked with uprooting evil below the earth on the Material Plane and within the Elemental Plane of Earth itself. They are great foes of drow, mind flayers, earth whispers, dao, and other vile creatures. On the Outer Planes they act as stewards of the lands beneath the surface, much in the same way hound and warden archons serve in the lands above. They are almost always promoted from hound archons in the service of the various lawful good deities of stone. Besides the gnomish and dwarven gods, some are also found in the service of Ulaa, Fortubo, and Bleredd of Oerth.

They were both statted in Races of Stone. This was the beginning of a project to integrate "generic" planar monsters better with Planescape and other planar races - some ideas I was playing with that I put in an ambiguously-named file and forgot about. It might be worth it to expand this thread with other little-used planar monsters, though.

Hmmm... Earth Whispers sound interesting. Just how anti-animal are they? Do they have anything against surface dwellers, or just object to people cutting stone and mining? If you're a farmer in a wooden house would they even notice you existed? Or are they so torqued off they want to eliminate mortal life? And what do these berks look like?
